What you come out able to do
Seven skills, and every one of them is a deliverable somebody pays for.
- Design analysis
- Assess a civil works design against its constraints and its risks.
- Calculations
- The quantitative work underneath a design decision.
- Estimation
- What a design will cost to build.
- Surveying
- Establishing what is actually there before anything is drawn.
- Detailed drawings
- Including the detailed design of civil concrete structures — RIICWD533E.
- Technical specifications
- The written half of a design, and the half that gets disputed.
- Bills of quantities
- The document a tender is priced against.
Twelve units — five core, seven elective
Five of the twelve are project and quality management rather than drafting. At this level the paperwork around a design is as much of the job as the design.

Bring a laptop with a current browser, a working email address, reliable internet, notebooks and a USB or external drive. You must be able to produce .docx, .xlsx, .pptx and .pdf files.
